Budapest is a city that rewards looking up. The skyline is low and pale and gorgeous — domes, spires, the green river threading between two hills — and the best way to take it all in is from a terrace with something cold in your hand. Over the years I have worked my way through most of the city’s high-up bars, on first dates, last nights and far too many “just one drink” evenings, and a clear handful stand out.

The good news is that Budapest rooftop bars are not the wallet-emptying affairs they are in London or Paris. You can nurse a genuinely good cocktail above the rooftops for the price of a mediocre pint back home. Below are the seven terraces I send friends to, what each one is actually like, and a few honest mentions for the season and the splurge. Reservations help at all of them on summer weekends.

Budapest’s rooftop bars at a glance

If you only have one evening, the table sorts them by what they do best — view, romance, party or that all-important sunset slot.

Rooftop Where Best for
High Note SkyBar Aria Hotel, by the Basilica The definitive Basilica view
360 Bar Andrássy Avenue Casual sunsets & winter igloos
Leo Rooftop Hotel Clark, Buda side Castle & Chain Bridge at your feet
Liz & Chain Budapest Marriott, riverfront 270° Danube panorama
St. Andrea Wine & Skybar Near Vörösmarty tér Wine with a four-season terrace
Intermezzo Roof Terrace Hotel President, downtown 360° downtown views
Mazel Tov Jewish Quarter Relaxed, leafy, ruin-bar crossover

High Note SkyBar — the one with the Basilica

If you visit a single rooftop in Budapest, make it this one. Perched on the ninth floor of the elegant Aria Hotel in District VI, High Note SkyBar puts the floodlit dome of St Stephen’s Basilica so close you feel you could touch it. The cocktails are properly made, the service is polished, and in 2025 the bar added a SKY Champagne Bar just above to mark the hotel’s tenth anniversary. It runs all year, the terrace gets busy after dark, and a booking for an evening table is strongly advised.

360 Bar — sunsets and winter igloos

More relaxed and more democratic, 360 Bar sits atop a building on Andrássy Avenue and lives up to its name with a wraparound panorama. The crowd is younger, the drinks list runs from signature cocktails to easy spritzes, and there is street food — burgers and the like — if hunger strikes. The clever twist comes in the cold months, when nine heated, transparent igloo domes appear on the roof, letting you sip a hot cocktail with the city spread out beyond the glass. It is one of the few rooftops here that genuinely works in winter.

Leo Rooftop — the Buda-side stunner

Cross to Buda for Leo, the sleek bar crowning Hotel Clark right at the foot of the Chain Bridge. The angle here is different from the Pest rooftops: you look back across the river at the lit-up bridge, the Parliament and the spread of Pest, with Buda Castle rising just behind you. Live DJs play Thursday through Sunday, the small-plates menu runs from Angus beef mini-burgers to Korean barbecue bao, and the cocktails match the polish of the setting. It is my pick for a special evening.

Liz & Chain — the widest river view

On top of the Budapest Marriott on the Pest embankment, Liz & Chain delivers a sweeping 270-degree panorama over the Danube, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge. Being right on the riverfront, it gives you the water itself in the frame rather than just the distant skyline, which makes for a knockout sunset. It is a smart, hotel-bar sort of place — come for the view and the cocktails rather than a wild night.

St. Andrea Wine & Skybar — for the wine lovers

Hungary makes seriously good wine, and St. Andrea is where to drink it with a view. Set atop a handsome building near Vörösmarty tér, it pairs two open terraces with a glass-walled bar, so it works whether the weather is kind or not — a true four-season spot. The estate behind it is one of the country’s most respected producers, so the by-the-glass list is a genuine education. Come at golden hour and order a flight.

Intermezzo Roof Terrace — downtown from every angle

Above Hotel President in the busy heart of downtown, Intermezzo offers a full 360-degree sweep, with the Hungarian National Treasury building and a parade of Art Nouveau rooftops right below you. It is a comfortable, slightly under-the-radar choice — less Instagram scrum than the marquee bars, with the same big-city view. A good shout if the bigger names are fully booked.

Mazel Tov — the leafy, low-key option

Not every rooftop has to be sleek and pricey. Mazel Tov, in the Jewish Quarter, is best known for its lush, plant-draped ground-floor ruin bar, but climb up and you will find a more laid-back terrace with city views and the same excellent Middle Eastern food and drinks. It is the rooftop to choose when you want the height without the dress code — relaxed, leafy and genuinely fun, and a natural pairing with a night among the Budapest ruin bars nearby.

Honourable mentions

Two more are worth knowing. White Raven Skybar bills itself as the highest rooftop bar in the city, trading proximity to the landmarks for sheer altitude and a different, bird’s-eye perspective. And in the warm season, the Sky Garden Rooftop Terrace at the Mystery Hotel opens — typically from late April to late September — as a lush, garden-style escape above the streets. Both are good back-pocket options when your first choice is heaving.

What to expect: prices, dress and timing

Compared with Western Europe, Budapest’s rooftop drinks are a bargain. Expect cocktails roughly in the 3,500–5,500 HUF range at the smarter hotel bars, less at the casual spots, and a glass of Hungarian wine for well under 3,000 HUF. Most places are smart-casual rather than strict on dress, though the hotel rooftops appreciate you making a little effort. The magic hour is, predictably, sunset — arrive forty minutes before and watch the city switch from gold to glittering. For an evening that pairs a great meal with the view, my guide to Budapest fine dining sits naturally alongside this one.

  • Book ahead for High Note, Leo and Liz & Chain on summer weekends — walk-ins often wait.
  • Arrive before sunset to claim a rail-side table for the light show.
  • Go in winter too — 360 Bar’s heated igloos and the glass-walled St. Andrea keep the season alive.
  • Mind the minimums; a few hotel rooftops ask for a small spend per person at peak times.
  • Pace yourself — these are the start of a night out, not the whole of it.

When to go rooftop-hopping

Rooftop season peaks from May to September, when every terrace is open and the long evenings stretch the golden hour. That said, Budapest’s smartest bars have made winter work: the heated igloos at 360 Bar and the enclosed terraces at St. Andrea and High Note mean you can have your Budapest rooftop bars moment even with frost on the ground. Whatever the month, aim for early in the evening on a weekend, or any night midweek, to dodge the worst of the crowds. Frequently asked questions

Which is the best rooftop bar in Budapest?

For most visitors, High Note SkyBar at the Aria Hotel takes the crown — the close-up view of the floodlit Basilica is unmatched and the cocktails live up to it. If you would rather look at the river, Leo Rooftop on the Buda side and Liz & Chain on the Marriott both put the Danube, the castle and the Chain Bridge front and centre.

Do you need to book Budapest rooftop bars?

For the hotel rooftops on summer weekends, yes — High Note, Leo and Liz & Chain fill up fast, and a reservation saves a wait. The more casual spots like 360 Bar and Mazel Tov usually take walk-ins, though arriving before sunset is still wise if you want a table by the edge.

How much do drinks cost at Budapest rooftop bars?

Expect cocktails of roughly 3,500–5,500 HUF at the smarter hotel bars and noticeably less at the casual terraces, with Hungarian wine by the glass often under 3,000 HUF. It remains far cheaper than rooftop drinking in most Western European capitals, which is part of the appeal.

Are Budapest rooftop bars open in winter?

Several are. 360 Bar installs heated, transparent igloo domes for the cold months, while St. Andrea and High Note have glass-walled sections that stay comfortable year-round. Many open-air-only terraces close from roughly October to April, so check ahead in the off-season.

What should I wear to a rooftop bar in Budapest?

Smart-casual covers almost everywhere. The hotel rooftops appreciate a little effort — no beachwear or gym kit — but Budapest is relaxed compared with some cities, and you will rarely be turned away for a neat, casual look. Bring a layer in spring and autumn, as it gets breezy up high after dark.
