About Budapest Tourism Guide
Budapest Tourism Guide is an independently published travel resource about one city. Not Central Europe, not “the Danube capitals” — Budapest, in the depth that a city with 120 thermal springs, two former halves and a permanently shifting restaurant scene actually requires.
Why a whole site for one city
Most Budapest coverage online stops at the same eight sights and the same two baths. That is enough for a weekend and useless for anything else. The questions people actually arrive with are more specific: which bath is worth it in February when the outdoor pools are steaming and the changing rooms are freezing; whether Szentendre is a half day or a full one; what a Hungarian menu means by pörkölt as opposed to gulyás; whether the Euronet ATM on Váci utca is a trap. Those answers need room, so this site gives them room — thirteen main guides of roughly five thousand words each, with around ninety shorter pieces underneath them handling the narrower questions.
How the guides are researched
Every guide is written from primary sources first and secondary ones second. Opening hours, ticket prices and closure notices come from the operator — Széchenyi’s own site, Rudas’s own site, BKK for transport, the museum’s own ticketing page — rather than from an aggregator that copied them two seasons ago. Where a claim is factual and contested, the source is linked in the text so you can check it yourself. Where something is a judgement, it is written as one.
Prices are given in forints, because that is what you will pay in. The site says so repeatedly and unkindly about the exchange desks that would rather you didn’t notice.
Keeping up with a city that keeps changing
Budapest is unusually hard to write about once and leave alone. Three examples currently live on the site:
- The Citadella on Gellért Hill reopened in March 2026 after eleven years of restoration. Guides that predate that still describe a building site.
- The Gellért Baths and Király Baths are both closed for renovation. Sending a reader to either is worse than sending them nowhere, so both have pages that say so plainly and route you to Rudas, Lukács or Széchenyi instead.
- Festival line-ups, Sziget’s dates and Christmas market opening weeks are re-checked each season rather than carried over.
Guides carry a visible update date. When something material changes, the guide changes — not a note bolted on at the bottom.
Who publishes this
The site is written and published by one person, Joseph Miskella, working independently. There is no agency behind it, no tourism board involvement, and no editorial input from anyone whose business is selling you a tour.
What is not for sale
No hotel, bath, restaurant or tour operator has paid to appear on this site, and none can. There are no sponsored posts, no paid placements, no “best of” positions available for purchase — when a page recommends Rudas over Gellért, the only reason is that Gellért is shut.
Some booking links, mostly for hotels and apartments, are affiliate links: book through one and the booking site pays a commission, at no extra cost to you. That is how the running costs are met, and it is deliberately kept separate from what gets recommended. A bath is not written up because it converts well — Rudas is still recommended over Gellért because Gellért is shut.
Corrections
Prices rise, restaurants close, and tram routes get rebuilt. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us through the contact page — corrections are welcome and get made quickly. Being right matters more than being first.
